My love of podcasts started when I began a new job that came with a 3 hour daily commute on public transport. They were a way to switch off from the world, block out all the noise and be informed or entertained, depending on my mood.

This love has grown exponentially during lockdown. I would head out of the house for my permitted hour of exercise with my headphones in and someone talking away in my ears. Bliss.

Since starting my own business, I have found that being a guest on podcasts is a great way to share my expertise…

When I’m working with my 1:1 clients and we are discussing how best to approach the job market, I describe the 4 routes in — noting that not all of these are created equal. Some of statistically more effective than others, some clients prefer one method over another.

This is YOUR job search, you need to get comfortable with the method(s) that are most effective for YOU.

Let’s walk through each one in turn.

1. Your Network

Your network is proven to be the most effective route into the job market, especially as almost two thirds of opportunities are filled through the hidden…

You’ve secured the role of your dreams and are breathing a sigh of relief as your job search comes to an end.

Now you realise that the hard work has only just begun. Your next challenge is to hit the ground running and reassure your new manager that you were the natural choice for the role.

What you need is a 90 Day Plan to keep you on track. Think of it as a GPS system, you tap in your destination and head straight there rather than getting lost and making a series of wrong turns along the way.

To help you feel better about your redundancy in the short run, and move on with your career in the long run, I’m sharing my expert tips on just what you should be doing…

In the first hour

Even if you are expecting it, news that your role is redundant will still come as a shock. Give it time to sink in.

In the first day first day

Share the news with your partner/family and close friends. You will need to lean on them over the coming weeks and months.

Ask the following questions to understand the exact terms of your redundancy:

  • What is your official leaving date?
  • Do you have to vacate the office immediately?
  • Do you need to create a handover? If so, who will you hand over to?

In the first week

Speak with legal professionals to review the terms of your redundancy and any…

I pulled together this list as a bit of light-hearted fun on one of my Monday morning LinkedIn Lives or #jobhuntingwithjane . This is a brain dump from me of all the words we associate with job searching. How many will you guess? What do you have in your list? Let me know in the comments below.

A is for Achievements, Applications & Applicant Tracking System (ATS)

Think about what your past achievements are, this is a strong indication of what you will bring to an organisation in the future. Many of my clients say things like “It’s hard for me, I was just doing my job”. Consider how you…

December is always a great time to reflect on the year that we will be leaving behind as well as getting ourselves ready for the year ahead. This also means freshening up your social media accounts and in particular LinkedIN.

You’ll find below a list of actions that I recommend you do each December to make sure that you are ready to take the new year by the horns. Let’s go from top to bottom.

It took me a while to take that leap of faith. After experiencing my second redundancy of the year and, licking my wounds for a while, I got back into the job market whilst all the while having this itch that I really wanted to scratch. The itch of starting my own business.

I’m an all or nothing kind of girl and realised that trying to build a business whilst looking for a job was not for me. After a lot of back and forth I decided to go for it.

Learning has always been a passion of mine and…

Many businesses are now using online interviews as a way to work through a high volume of applicants and/or reducing travel costs when recruiting overseas.

Tom Cruise as “Jerry Maguire”

The 31st March is “Quit Your Crappy Job” Day — who knew there was such a thing, but then again why should we be surprised? I’m sure that we can all name at least one of our close circle of friends who detests their job and are too stuck to know what they really want to do or, if they know the answer to that question, have the courage to quit their “crappy job”.

I was speaking with a Career Coaching client about this only last week. They wanted to leave their job and I suggested that rather than jumping…

I got home from my New Year dinner and posted the photo featured below on Facebook. This was taken at the beginning of the evening and at first glance there is nothing extraordinary about it, except that I was holding a gin cocktail with a caption saying how excited I was to be tasting my first drink after abstaining from alcohol for the whole of 2018.

I was surprised by the positive response I received, many people did not know I had set this as a personal challenge for 2018. They asked a number of questions, so I thought I…
