The word “Networking” sends a shiver down the spine of most people.

We’ve all been at the event where we were cornered by someone trying to sell us something we had no interest in, someone nervously telling bad “dad” jokes to try and ease the tension, or worse, an awkward silence because neither of you knew what question to ask next.

Networking is more than collecting business cards or LinkedIn connections, it’s about starting to build authentic, mutually beneficial relationships. It is all too easy in today’s digital-first world to hide behind your computer screen, but networking is an essential skill that can accelerate your career, grow your business and help you make an impact.

So, how to you shift your mindset from one of dread to one of glee?

Figure out your strategy first

Why are you going in the first place? Are you networking for a job, mentorship, or industry insight? Determining your purpose before you arrive helps you to direct your efforts while you are there.

With some events, you may be able to ask the organiser to introduce you to someone in particular or someone who works in a particular field. Make a point of reminding the organiser when you arrive and they will do their best to make the introduction.
